"Dehydration-The Silent Killer!" Says Dr Batmanghelidij

Dehydration simply means not drinking enough water.

We lose 2.5 quarts of water everyday to exhalation and elimination. The body's tolerance for water is very critical. If the water we lose is not replaced, and since most people do not drink 2-3 quarts of water per day, the body responds by rationing the water it has.

According to Dr Batmanghelidj, the body releases histomine and it regulates the priority and distribution of the body's scarce water resources.

The brain and heart of course are top priority. Things like spinal disks or leg bones are lower priority. The problem arises when these "low priority" organs and systems are deprived of adequate water over a period of time, chronic dehydration.

Pain is frequently the way these systems and organs make their plight known. However, most doctors will tell you that you have a disease; diabetes, asthma, cancer, low back pain, cardiovascular disease, etc. Today's Medical establishment has not discovered the true role that water and water management plays in the body, resulting in treatment for non-existant diseases with expensive and dangerous drugs for the rest of your life.

For instance, Dr Batmanghelidj proved that most back pain, arthritis and other joint pains result from lack of water to the cartelidge in the joints. By drinking more water, the pain goes away.

When water is short, histamine inhibits the release of insulin, which in addition to facilitating the transport of sugar into the cells, also assists water to enter all the cells. Since water is short, it is not desireable that all cells have access to available water on an equal basis, so that the production of insulin is curtailed, resulting in what the doctors call, Type 2 diabetes. Again, with sufficient water intake, the insulin production goes back to normal and the diabetes goes away.

Dehydration of the blood and cells kicks off a chain of negative health consequences. Dehydration causes the blood to become more acidic, which is an environment that disease microbes and cancer thrive in. Acidosis causes a cascade of free radicals to be released, which can damage DNA, cell walls and enzymes, which are basically proteins.

Enzymes are responsible for virtually every process in the body, from release of hormones to the production of energy in the cells. They are very sensitive to their environment. If they are damaged, either directly by free radicals or acid, the process they govern will be affected, resulting in all sorts of ailments, such as Multiple Sclerosis, eyesight, digestion, etc. which are promptly labeled diseases and treated with expensive drugs that do nothing to address the underlying condition and in fact, damage the body further because of their acid nature.

Free Radicals (Cellular Oxidation) Another of The Four Basic Causes of All Diseases

Oxidation (Free Radicals) and its Affect on Your Health

Oxidation occurs when elements or materials are exposed to free radicals in the environment. We have all seen examples of this in nature.

• Metals Rust
• Plants Wilt then Decay
• Proteins Putrefy
• Oils get Sticky and Rancid

The actual process of oxidation occurs when free radicals scavenge these materials for electron donors. So let’s take a small detour here to understand how free radicals are created.

• Free radicals are created when an atom or a molecule looses 1 or more electrons producing an instability in the overall electrical charge of that atom or molecule.

•Free radicals are the normal by-products of chemical chain reactions
as well as mechanical processes. So things like manufacturing
processes, engines running, burning wastes, producing electricity and
burning fossil fuels are a few of the ways that free radicals are
produced in our environment every day.

• Free radicals are also produced in our cells as by-products of cellular
respiration on a continual basis.

• Free radicals multiply rapidly the longer food is stored before it is
consumed.

Worry and negative thoughts can also produce free radicals.

Once these free radicals have been produced they begin to wreck havoc on our bodies. Each free radical that we ingest through the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food we eat can result in damage to our cells. Let me explain how this happens.

• These unstable free radicals seek stability. The only way for them to
become stable once again is to “recapture” their missing electrons.

• This is accomplished by scavenging electrons from healthy tissues in
the body.

• As electrons are scavenged from body tissues those tissues become
unstable and begin to either break down or mutate.

• These unstable or mutated tissues contain more free radicals and they begin to scavenge more electrons from surrounding tissues.
Eventually this can lead to a major change in the tissue as this
destruction continues. In fact, this is the process that is responsible for all diseases.

When you consider that our bodies are all made from basic minerals, plant matter, proteins and fats, as these substances begin to oxidize they begin to rust, rot, decay and go rancid. This is the systematic destruction of the body.

This destruction creates a biological aging of the body that is evident
through a microscope as well as the naked eye. This destruction of
oxidation results in wrinkles, degeneration of our bones, muscles, organ and glandular systems, a weakening of cellular membranes and a loss of vital energy. It ultimately leads to diseases and eventually death.

Halting or Reversing the Destruction of Oxidation
Anti-oxidants are electron donors that counteract the destruction of
oxidation. The greater our intake of both simple and complex anti-oxidants the faster this destruction is slowed or stopped altogether.

Vitamins A, C & E have long been extolled for their high levels of antioxidants. Super foods like blueberries, goji berries, acai berries, kale, algae and seaweeds are now in the health news regularly because of their A, C & E contents. These nutrients are very complex and carry molecular weights that vary between 150 microns for A, 176 microns for C and 153 microns for E.

Ionized water is also a powerful antioxidant, in fact, it is probably the most powerful antioxidant you an safely take. The anti-oxidant potential of water can be measured in millivolts (mV) with an Oxidation-Reduction Potential Meter.

The higher the positive meter reading the greater the oxidation potential it carries, the more potential to damange your body. The higher the negative meter reading the greater the reduction or anti-oxidant potential it carries.

In very simple terms Oxidation-Reduction Potential is the potential of a fluid to either increase oxidation or reduce oxidation.

Within the cells (especially in the mitochondria) it is essential to have a high number of negatively charged electrons (electron donors). This condition sets the stage for 2 very important functions, optimal production of energy on a cellular level and neutralization of free radicals produced through normal cellular respiration. Conversely, a high number of positively charged ions (free radicals) create a very undesirable condition known as oxidation which results in cellular destruction.

Human bodies are composed of roughly 70-100 trillion cells which are
primarily water – up to 98% depending on the function of the cell. So it only stands to reason that the water we consume is the water that makes up those cells.

Surprisingly, water can be one of the most corrosive substances that we ingest every day, yet it is absolutely essential for life.

Chronic Blood Acidosis, the Third Basic Cause of Most Chronic Illnesses

Acidosis: The pH Balancing Act

With the aging population of the United States, the incidence of so-called age-related diseases should be expected to rise. In fact the incidence of cancer, heart disease, diabetes and a host of other diseases have been steadily rising for all age groups until it has reached epidemic proportions. That is because the factors of stress, lack of physical activity, environmental pollutants and a diet high in acid-producing foods collectively create the underlying cause of most degenerative diseases: acidosis.

Proper pH Balance is Fundamental

What is acidosis? It is the reduced alkalinity of our blood and tissues. Why is this so important? Our body stays alive and healthy only because all of its 100 trillion cells communicate with each other. They do this through electrical, chemical, and hormonal processes. In order for these signaling mechanisms to work, the body’s internal environment must be in a slightly alkaline state. If our body becomes too acidic, it adversely affects the functioning of all its parts: heart cells, blood cells, brain cells, nerve cells, muscle cells, bone cells, even skin and hair cells. Obviously this leaves us vulnerable to all sorts of health problems.

The acidity or alkalinity of a substance is usually expressed as a number on the “pH” scale. The pH scale goes from 1 to 14, with 1 being most acidic, 7 being neutral, and 14 most alkaline. (The symbol “pH” is the abbreviation for “power of hydrogen,” a measurement of the concentration of hydrogen ions.) For blood, a pH level of 7.43 – just slightly alkaline- is optimal. Levels lower than 7.0 indicate an overly acidic state (acidosis) while levels above 7.5 indicate an overly alkaline state (called alkalosis).

The Problem with Chronic Acidosis


Acidosis begins when the body cannot properly dispose of excessive acids building up in the bloodstream. The body attempts to maintain proper pH balance by eliminating the excess acids through the kidneys, lungs and skin or by neutralizing the acids during the processes of digestion and cellular metabolism. However, when too much acid is produced, the body cannot keep pace. The excess waste overwhelms the system, polluting the blood and impairing the ability of the body’s cells to communicate.

In an effort to protect vital organs, the body diverts the harmful acids to store in tissues, joints and bones. This might make the organs temporarily safe, but the diversion can cause joint and skeletal problems suck as osteo- and rheumatoid arthritis; skin conditions such as dermatitis and eczema; and tissue problems such as chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.

Over time, the acids build up in the organs where the body’s state of acidosis is a prime breeding ground for pathogens such as bacteria, fungi, molds and parasites, which feed off of the diseased tissues and organs. Acidosis literally destroys the body from the inside out, paving the way for disease to take over.

In an attempt to neutralize excess acids, the body draws on its store of alkalizing minerals. Calcium, magnesium and sodium are drawn into the bloodstream at the expense of the bones and organs that these minerals were taken from. The bones are often the hardest hit, as they are drained of their necessary calcium reserves, leading to bone thinning and an increased risk of osteoporosis, rheumatism and fractures. The teeth also suffer as a result of demineralization, making them more brittle and cavity-prone.

Keeping the body in an acidic state for a prolonged period of time can dramatically accelerate aging. Cellular structures become altered. Cell membranes become narrower and weaker. The cells eventually begin making “mistakes” as they try to repair and regenerate themselves. Acidosis inhibits the production of collagen and elastin. Collagen is the principal protein of our bones, cartilage, tendons and skin and provides rigidity. Elastin is a protein that gives our skin, blood vessels and organs elasticity. Without collagen and elastin, the body loses its youthful appearance, as it is no longer able to sustain moisturized and wrinkle-free skin. Internally, the body is also aging more rapidly. The premature cell death impairs brain function, as the neurons can no longer properly conduct impulses. We begin to experience memory loss and the abilities to learn and reason decline.

With untreated acidosis, excess acids within the body attack the tissues and organs, resulting in inflammation, lesions and hardening of organ tissues. The skin and kidneys are especially sensitive to the harmful acids. Hives, eczema, blotching and itching can occur from acidic sweat passing through the skin’s pores. The kidneys can become inflamed, which can lead to frequent urinary tract infections. Hardening of tissues and inflammation are also contributors to cardiovascular disease, and resultant increased risk of heart attack or stroke.

In a state of acidosis, there is less oxygen available to the body. Many pathogens live in oxygen-deprived environments. Acidosis, then, makes the body a prime breeding ground for harmful microorganisms to live. Acid buildup also takes a nasty toll on the body’s immune function by seriously diminishing the production of white blood cells. The white blood cells that are generated are of reduced strength, making it even easier for disease and infection to take hold within the body. Dangerous microorganisms can now spread throughout the body, seeking out weakened areas. They break down tissues and interfere with biological processes, leaving behind a deadly wake of waste, which further perpetuates the acidic state.

Chronic acidosis also contributes to a state of insulin resistance within the body by interfering with glucose delivery to the cells. Normally, ordinary levels of insulin will escort glucose into the cells. With acidosis, the cell receptors fail to recognize the insulin hormone and deny it access to deposit the glucose, causing sugar to build up within the bloodstream. The pancreas, unaware of the insulin resistance, steps up insulin production in an effort to pump out enough of the hormone to remedy the situation. The body interprets the lack of glucose within the cells as starvation and begins to convert every calorie into fat. As a result, obesity and diabetes ensue.

Restoring Acid-Alkaline Balance


The most effective way to reduce acids within the body is by enacting dietary changes. A proper diet should be comprised of 60-80% alkalizing foods and 40-20% acid-forming foods. The Standard American Diet is mostly made up of acid-forming foods including coffee, tea, wine and most proteins (with the exception of milk, butter, soft cheese and almonds) as well as most fats, cereals and sugars. On the other hand, almost all fruits and vegetables (except for tomatoes, cranberries and blueberries) are alkalizing.

Dietary supplements can also be very effective at restoring an alkaline state to the body. Calcium, magnesium, potassium and pH balancing supplements all help to maintain normal pH levels. In doing so they also help regulate sugar metabolism, blood pressure, enhance energy and stabilize hormones. Restoring proper pH balance can significantly improve and sometimes even completely reverse chronic conditions. With recognition, dietary changes and supplementation, acidosis can safely be reversed, increasing longevity and improving the quality of life.

ENZYMES ARE ESSENTIAL TO EVERY CELL IN THE BODY!
Enzyme deficiencies are the 4th factor in most chronic, degenerative diseases.


Enzymes have 2 major functions in the body.

Structure: They break down, digest, the foods we eat into amino acids from proteins, fatty acids from fats and glucose from carbohydrates. They then take these building blocks and build the cells, nerves, tissues, etc that constitute the muscles, bones and other structures of the body. They also do the reverse, breaking down the muscles, bones, etc. when they are worn out or damaged.

Energy: All the activities of the body, the senses, motion, thinking, breathing, etc require enzymes in order to take place.

Without the presence of properly functioning enzymes, nothing in your body would work and you would die. If their ability to function is impaired, the affected body parts or systems do not function correctly, resulting in "disease."

An example are the enzymes involved in pumping insulin into muscle cells so that sugar, glucose, can enter the cells. If the enzymes (insulin receptors) are not working right, no insulin gets into the cells, which means no sugar gets into the cells, instead building up in the blood, resulting in "diabetes."

Enzymes are very sensitive to their fluid environment. If there is not enough water in the cells, the enzymes can't work. If the temperature of the body is too high, the enzymes, which are proteins, will die. If the surrounding cellular fluid is too viscous, thick, the enzymes do not work properly.

"Enzymes function optimally at a specific pH and become inactive if this deviates beyond narrow limits," - Anatomy and Physiology by Anthony and Thibodeau. However, within defined limits, the higher the pH, the stronger the enzyme action.

Also, if the body is overrun with free radicals, the enzymes will be damaged by oxidation.

Enzymes are a key component of the immune system. Proteases or protein eating enzymes eat the protective coating off bacteria, viruses, fungi and cancer cells, allowing them to be identified and killed by the immune system.

You can see how this all ties in together with the 3 other nutritional factors we talked about above. That is why you need proper hydration, proper pH and adequate antioxidants. Without properly functioning enzymes, you get sick or even die.

The body makes thousands of different enzymes since they are fairly specific in their action. For instance, proteolytic enzymes break down only proteins, amylase works only on carbohydrates, lypases digest fats, etc. While your body makes much of its needed enzymes, it relies on enzymes contained in the food we eat to provide maybe half of the enzymes needed to digest the food. Enzymes are found mainly in raw, fresh fruits and vegetables.

If you cook your food, you destroy the enzymes in it, meaning your body has to use up twice the amount of enzymes, decreasing their availability for other functions. Since enzymes are produced in your body in your gut by "good" bacteria; an imbalance in your gut flora, more bad bugs than good, lead to a decrease in your enzyme supply, causing illness and disease.

Also, enzymes are the foundation of your immune system. Any shortage or malfunctioning of the enzymes in the gut means an impaired immune system, opening the way for cancer, for instance.

Age is another important factor. A 25 year old produces twice the enzymes of a 70 year old.

Bottom line? Between cooked and processed foods, unbalanced gut flora, age, etc. most of us are enzyme deficient, with the resultant sickness, disease and aging.

Now of course, the impact of dehydration, acidity and oxidants in the body still must be correct in order for the enzymes to function properly.

Properly functioning enzymes can take care of inflammation, which is a factor in pain, heart disease, cancer and many other chronic, degenerative diseases.

In closing, you can eat all the organic food you want, take all the vitamins, antioxidants and minerals in the world, if you do not have enough functioning enzymes, you will never have good health. To make sure you have enough of these valuable nutrients, you must add them to your list of nutritional supplements.
